Gillespie Field Annex - San Diego Air & Space Museum

Gillespie Field public airport is located approximately 11.5 miles northeast of downtown San Diego, in El Cajon, San Diego County, California. The San Diego Air & Space Museum Annex is located on the north side of the airfield and exhibits a varied collection of aircraft, including a number of Cold War era jets.

The annex opened in 1993, to provide extra storage space for the expanding aircraft collection of the San Diego Aerospace Museum (renamed San Diego Air & Space Museum in 2006) located in the Ford Building, Balboa Park. The annex also houses the museums restoration and replica reproduction programme, which is staffed mainly by volunteers, many of whom were employed in the regions aircraft industry.

The entrance to the annex on Kenney Street is gate guarded by an SM-65E Atlas Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, built by the Convair Division of General Dynamics at an assembly plant at Kearny Mesa, San Diego.
