RAF Leuchars opened in March 1920 and during the Second World War was used as an RAF Coastal Command airfield. Leuchars became a fighter station in 1950 and throughout the Cold War and beyond was a Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) station used for policing the northern U.K. airspace, first with the English Electric Lightning, then the McDonnell Douglas F‑4K Phantom FG.1, Panavia Tornado F.3 and finally the Eurofighter Typhoon. In 2015 the station was handed over to the British Army and renamed Leuchars Station, though the RAF continues to operate a fully operational airfield 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Saturday 7th September.
This was the 65th and final Battle of Britain at Home Airshow to be held by the RAF at the base since they began
in 1946. In 2014 the operational squadrons based at Leuchars moved north to RAF Lossiemouth, and in 2015
the base was handed over to the British Army.

2010 ‑ RAF Leuchars International Airshow
Saturday 11th September.
Air Defence: Past, Present and Future was the theme for the 2010 airshow. The base displayed the newly formed
Eurofighter Typhoon‑equipped RAF No. 6 Squadron. Sadly, it was the final U.K. display of the Panavia
Tornado F.3 before its retirement.
