Blackbird Airpark

Lockheed U-2D (56-6721 ‘Article 388’). During a training flight in August 1959, 56-6721 had to make a belly landing at Cortez, Colorado, after the engine flamed out at 70,000ft. Repaired and re-designated a D model, the aircraft was modified to accomodate a second crewman and a sensor suite (MIDAS array) to measure infrared emissions from aircraft and missiles. The aircraft served on various test programs till retired from service in 1978.
